Apple is reportedly preparing to launch its next iPad mini as the company’s first-ever water-resistant tablet, with an expected release window by October, according to Macrumors. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman previously indicated that Apple has been working on an updated casing to provide protection comparable to the iPhone, making the device safe for casual use in wet environments such as bathrooms and pool areas. No existing iPad model currently carries an official water resistance rating, and Apple does not consider current versions safe to get wet.

To achieve this design, Apple has reportedly developed a vibration-based speaker system that eliminates traditional speaker holes. Instead of open grilles, sound would emit from flat surfaces on the tablet’s chassis, turning parts of the body into a speaker diaphragm. This approach differs from the methods used in the iPhone, which relies on adhesives and gaskets to seal openings against water and dust intrusion. The concept traces back to a 2014 Apple patent describing a mechanically actuated panel acoustic system designed to generate sound by vibrating flat panels. A sealed chassis would also close a practical gap between Apple’s smallest tablet and dedicated e-readers like the Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Libra Color, which feature immersion ratings for reading in the bath or by the pool.

OLED Display Upgrade and New Speaker Technology
The upcoming iPad mini is expected to be part of a major overhaul, introducing an OLED screen that will replace the traditional LCD panel found in the iPad mini 7, as reported by 9to5Mac. The transition to OLED will deliver higher contrast, true blacks, and better power efficiency, making the mini the second iPad line to adopt the technology following the debut of the OLED iPad Pro in 2024. Samsung Display reportedly began mass production of OLED panels for the device in June. A Korean source indicated that the panel is an 8.4-inch LTPS design clocked at 60Hz, which would exclude ProMotion support.

Water resistance and the OLED display are part of at least four major changes anticipated for the device this year. Alongside the display and casing updates, the tablet is slated for a significant processor upgrade. Code discovered in a macOS kernel debug kit and accidental disclosures by Apple point to the integration of either the A19 Pro chip or the unreleased A20 Pro. Apple previously updated the iPad mini in October 2024 with the A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence support. Following company-wide price increases in June, the current iPad mini starts at $599.
Broader iPad Lineup and Timeline Context
While the iPad mini is slated for an October release following Apple’s September hardware announcements, other tablets in the ecosystem are tracking for later release windows, according to Techspot. Updates for the standard entry-level iPad are anticipated in the first quarter of 2027, with an OLED-equipped iPad Air and a new iPad Pro following in the spring. Gurman describes the combined upcoming updates as the largest overhaul of the iPad lineup in half a decade.
