Authorities in California arrested a 38-year-old armed man near President Donald Trump’s Rancho Palos Verdes golf course on Sunday afternoon. Plainclothes federal agents spotted the suspect monitoring security preparations ahead of a planned Republican Party fundraising dinner, prompting a multi-agency law enforcement investigation that uncovered weapons and body armor at his home.
Law enforcement officers in Southern California took Jeanine John Taele into custody on Sunday afternoon at the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. The arrest unfolded just two days before President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit the wealthy coastal enclave for a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner.
Plainclothes federal agents flagged the suspect after observing him walking on the grounds, taking photos and videos while appearing to monitor security planning activities. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies confronted the 38-year-old Downey resident and quickly determined he was also wanted by the El Segundo Police Department in connection with a robbery.
Weapons Recovered at the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf Course
When deputies detained Taele at the club parking lot, they discovered a 16-round magazine containing hollow-point ammunition inside his pants pocket. A search of his vehicle yielded a loaded pistol with a round chambered, along with an additional loaded magazine of hollow-point ammunition, as reported by ABC7.
California state law enforces strict firearm regulations, banning magazines capable of holding more than 10 bullets. Investigators booked Taele on multiple felony charges, including second-degree robbery, receiving a large-capacity magazine, and possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, alongside a misdemeanor charge for carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle.
Federal Raid on the Suspect’s Downey Residence
Following the golf course arrest, investigators executed a search warrant on Monday afternoon at Taele’s home in Downey. The raid was conducted by agents from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, the LA County Sheriff’s Department Major Crimes Bureau, and local authorities due to the potential security implications surrounding the incident.
Inside the residence, law enforcement uncovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a 1911 .45-caliber pistol, an AR-platform upper receiver, body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition for pistols and rifles, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing concerning statements.
Court Appearance and Ongoing Federal Investigation
Taele appeared in court on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges. A judge ordered him to stay away from the golf club and prohibited him from possessing weapons, setting his bail at $250,000.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that the investigation remains active in coordination with the United States Secret Service and federal partners.
