Franklin Road’s Festive Tradition: A 30-Year Legacy of Community Christmas Lights
For over three decades, Auckland’s Franklin Road has transformed into a dazzling winter wonderland, captivating residents and visitors alike with its spectacular Christmas light displays. This isn’t a council-run event or a corporate sponsorship, but a heartwarming tradition fueled by the generosity and spirit of the community. Let’s explore the history, the dedication, and what makes this street a must-see during the holiday season.

The origins of a Bright Idea
The story begins with Roscoe Thorby, who sparked the initial festive cheer. It started as a simple act of neighborly fun, gradually expanding as more households joined in. Today, over 80% of homes between Ponsonby Road and Wellington Street participate, creating a truly immersive experience.
Despite persistent rumors about funding from electricity companies or the local council, Thorby emphasizes that participation is entirely voluntary. Its a “gift for the people from Franklin Road,” a testament to the community’s desire to spread joy.
Beyond the Sparkle: The effort Behind the Lights
While the displays appear magical, they represent significant effort and personal investment from residents. Franklin Lights coordinator, Eric Wilson, notes that the cost of electricity, especially with the widespread use of LEDs, is surprisingly manageable. however, the real commitment lies in the time and resources homeowners dedicate to their displays.
“The idea that it is individual households that make a decision to fund the lights and in many cases, pay for their installation, seems a little alien to some,” Wilson explains.
The tradition has even spread beyond Franklin Road itself, with neighboring Wood and Arthur streets joining the festive fun. It’s not about extravagance, though. Thorby stresses that simply participating is what truly matters.
A Tradition of Creativity and Community
Over the years, Franklin Road’s displays have showcased unbelievable creativity. Wilson fondly recalls a stunning light sculpture of Rodin’s “The Thinker” and a particularly witty display featuring the word “Ditto” illuminated with an arrow pointing to the next house.
These displays aren’t just about aesthetics; they’re about connection and shared experience. Wilson, who took over coordination from Thorby last year, highlights the simple joy the lights bring to children and families as the primary motivation for continuing the tradition.
Protecting the Spirit: Addressing Commercialization
The popularity of Franklin Road’s lights has, unfortunately, attracted unwanted commercial activity. In 2023,council officers began patrolling the street to address vendors selling merchandise without permission, following complaints from residents.
Organizers are committed to preserving the community spirit and ensuring the event remains free for families to enjoy, especially during challenging economic times. “Times are tough,” Thorby says, reinforcing the importance of accessibility. Patrols will continue this year to maintain this atmosphere.
