Beer consumption fell last year, both at home and in the pub. Brewers blame the downturn on the bad summer and price increases.

More than 11.5 million hectoliters of beer were sold in 2023, 5.6 percent less than in 2022. Before corona, in 2019, this was still 12.1 million hectoliters.

Pils is still by far the most popular type of beer, with more than 9 million hectoliters sold, but it is also the beer that suffered the most in terms of figures; Last year 6.5 percent less was sold than in 2022.

Special beer

Non-alcoholic and low-alcohol (up to 3.5 percent) beer continues the rise of recent years. Nearly 74 percent more of this category was sold than in 2022. Specialty beer, often with higher alcohol percentages, lost many percent of its market share.

The waning interest in specialty beer also plays a role in the decline in the number of breweries. For the first time in twenty years, more breweries closed than started. In 2023, the Netherlands had 920 breweries, 76 fewer than a year earlier.
