Tech giants Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet saw their corporate earnings inflated during the most recent quarter by multibillion-dollar equity gains from private artificial intelligence companies Anthropic and OpenAI. According to market data from LSEG, these paper gains distorted underlying financial health, masking more modest operational growth across the S&P 500.
Venture capital portfolios held by the technology sector’s largest players are playing an outsized role in shaping quarterly financial statements. As private market valuations for generative intelligence developers surge toward the trillion-dollar mark, public shareholders holding equity stakes are required to account for those increases on their income statements. That accounting reality, however, reflects shifting private valuations rather than actual software sales or cloud service revenue.
How Private AI Stakes Alter S&P 500 Earnings Growth
The impact on broader market metrics has proven substantial. According to Tajinder Dhillon, LSEG’s head of earnings and equity research, S&P 500 earnings growth for the quarter reached roughly 48% higher than a year prior. When analysts strip out investment gains tied to private AI developers, that growth rate drops to approximately 29%, aligning much more closely with pre-earnings analyst consensus forecasts of 24%.
Most financial analysts actively exclude these one-time non-operating items when building forward-looking estimates. Yet in the short term, the surge generated widespread earnings upside surprises. Companies reported earnings averaging 7% above expectations during the reporting cycle, outpacing the long-term historical average of 4.4% above consensus.
Individual Tech Giant Exposures: Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft
Because these investment gains are typically cataloged under other income,
reporting methods vary significantly across major technology firms. Amazon committed $50 billion to OpenAI in late February while also serving as an early investor in Anthropic. The e-commerce and cloud giant reported a year-over-year jump in earnings exceeding 240%, though that figure moderates to about 17% when excluding a $53.4 billion gain primarily tied to its investment in Anthropic.
Alphabet experienced a similar distortion driven largely by SpaceX, where the Google parent company maintains a roughly 5% stake. Alphabet’s bottom-line growth surged nearly 300%, a figure that would sit closer to 23% without contributions from SpaceX and Anthropic. Microsoft experienced a more muted effect, though it still added about 10 percentage points to its earnings growth through an investment gain in Anthropic alongside a $480 million gain on its OpenAI stake.
Market Volatility and Upcoming Public Listings
The tight financial coupling between Big Tech and unlisted developers highlights a mutual reliance that precedes any public market debuts. Both Anthropic and OpenAI have filed confidentially with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and expect to list publicly within the coming year.
That market exposure cuts in both directions, introducing potential volatility into future reporting periods. SpaceX shares have traded roughly 50% below their initial post-IPO highs, pointing toward potential mark-to-market adjustments.
Other market observers maintain that underlying corporate profits remain robust regardless of private asset swings. Jeff Kilburg, founder and CEO of KKM Financial, described the massive profits generated by mega-cap technology firms as extra gains on top of an already strong earnings season
while characterizing corporate profit expansion as jaw-dropping even independent of private startup valuations.
Historic Scale of Pending AI Exits
Beyond quarterly earnings adjustments, the wider financial ecosystem is absorbing unprecedented capital inflows into private technology markets. According to data from the NVCA-Pitchbook Venture Monitor report, the pending public market debuts for OpenAI and Anthropic alongside SpaceX will generate more value than all U.S. VC-backed exits since 2000,
as noted by TechCrunch.
SpaceX completed its public market debut at a valuation of $1.77 trillion. With Anthropic and OpenAI both commanding private valuations pushing into the trillions, the collective trio is projected to land north of $4 trillion in total market value. By comparison, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission recorded just $70 billion in total U.S.-based initial public offering proceeds during the previous year, demonstrating the massive scale shift driven by capital-intensive artificial intelligence training expenses.
