The German company BMW Group announces on Tuesday morning that it will open a software solutions development center in Cluj-Napoca, through a partnership with NTT DATA, one of the largest IT services companies in the world, where it will employ 250 software developers up to at the end of the year. This is BMW’s first major investment in Romania, and so far there is no public plan for an investment in production. However, the company does not specify the amount to which the investment in the software development center will amount.

BMW Group and NTT DATA Romania have signed an agreement for the establishment of a Joint Venture (JV) in Romania.

“The new location in Romania is intended to support BMW Group IT in Europe and drive IT projects and innovations for production, development, human resources, sales and BMW Financial Services,” the company says.

“With NTT DATA, we rely on another strong partner that has an excellent network in a vibrant technology region and allows us to quickly and specifically develop additional software competencies. In collaboration with companies like NTT DATA we can establish strong IT hubs and thus provide an answer to the shortage of IT experts”, says Alexander Buresch, CIO and Senior Vice President of BMW Group IT.

“We are proud to announce our plans to open a new software solutions development center in Cluj-Napoca together with the BMW Group. This collaboration aims to help the car manufacturer lead the digital transformation”, says Maria Metz, CEO at NTT DATA Romania.

The JV is to be established in Cluj-Napoca, in Romania. BMW claims the university city offers a strong ecosystem for innovation, with strong entrepreneurship, startups and a large pool of talent on the tech scene. This creates a high potential for long-term growth of the JV. The JV is expected to employ approximately 250 software developers at the end of 2024 and plans to grow to a four-figure headcount by 2027.

The BMW Group and NTT DATA have been collaborating on a wide range of projects for over 30 years. The signing of the joint venture agreement marks the next important step in this partnership.
