Leeds Festival 2024: A weekend of Rising Stars and Headliner Hiccups
Leeds Festival 2024 delivered a mixed bag of performances, showcasing both established acts and a thrilling wave of emerging talent. despite a strong lineup boasting bigger names than in recent years, the festival’s opening day felt somewhat lacking in energy. However, the weekend quickly gained momentum, culminating in a series of standout sets that signaled a luminous future for live music.
Friday: A Rocky Start
Travis Scott‘s highly anticipated Friday headlining performance built to a visually impressive crescendo with pyrotechnics and fireworks. Unfortunately, the set concluded abruptly 35 minutes early without description, leaving many in the crowd disappointed and voicing their frustration.
Saturday: Chappell Roan Steals the Show
Saturday witnessed a substantially larger crowd, and the energy was palpable. Chappell Roan, positioned as a co-headliner, entirely captivated the audience, drawing the largest crowd of the entire weekend.
Her performance was nothing short of sensational, continuing a remarkable ascent since the release of her 2023 album, The Rise and fall of a Midwest Princess.
Roan’s stage presentation was a visual feast, featuring a fantasy castle backdrop and costumes blending past and pop art influences. Her band evoked the spirit of prince’s legendary ensembles.
She fearlessly tackled important themes – LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, and mental health – transforming them into anthems of joy and empowerment.
Few artists have commanded the field with such authority in recent memory. Following Roan’s electrifying set, Hozier delivered a powerful performance. He connected with the audience on a deeper level, speaking passionately about Kneecap, Palestine, and the importance of equality before closing with a rousing rendition of “Take Me to Church.”
Sunday: rock Takes Center Stage
Sunday was dedicated to rock music, and Bring Me the Horizon delivered a truly innovative headline set. The Sheffield band created a postmodern spectacle, transforming their performance into an immersive video game experience.Oli Sykes, the band’s frontman, embodied the role of a demonic commander, seamlessly integrating the audience into the performance through synchronized movements and energetic circle pits.
Beyond the headliners, Sunday also highlighted the incredible potential of newer artists. Wunderhorse, in particular, demonstrated explosive growth as their BBC Introducing stage appearance last year.
They packed the Chevron stage, typically reserved for dance music.
Their sound draws comparisons to nirvana and REM, but their unique edge – largely attributed to the captivating presence of frontman jacob Slater – sets them apart.
They effortlessly captivated an audience spanning multiple generations.
Leeds Festival 2024 ultimately proved to be a celebration of both established stars and the next generation of musical talent. While the opening day presented some challenges, the festival rebounded with a series of unforgettable performances, leaving attendees excited about the future of live music. You can expect to hear a lot more from the artists who shone brightly this weekend.
