New Coalition Launches in Chicopee to Tackle Health Inequities

Chicopee, Massachusetts is embarking on a collaborative effort to improve the health and well-being of its residents. The Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts (PHIWM) and the city of Chicopee have announced the launch of Advancing Chicopee Together/Adelantando Chicopee Juntos (ACT), a new community coalition designed to address systemic health disparities and promote equity. This initiative, rooted in extensive community input, will initially concentrate on enhancing access to nutritious food and improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes within the city. The coalition’s formation is part of a broader statewide movement focused on regional and racial equity in health, recognizing that localized solutions are crucial for lasting change.

The require for such a coalition is underscored by data revealing that Chicopee experiences higher rates of chronic conditions like hypertension and obesity compared to the state average, contributing to premature mortality. Addressing Key Health Challenges in Chicopee

The ACT coalition’s focus on food access and maternal/perinatal health reflects the specific needs identified by the Chicopee community. AHEM prioritizes maternal health and the social determinants of health, employing a place-based framework that empowers communities to identify their own strengths and develop tailored solutions. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health plays a key role in supporting AHEM and other initiatives aimed at improving health outcomes across the state. This approach recognizes that health is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, including socioeconomic status, education, housing, and access to healthcare.

The coalition’s strategies are multifaceted, encompassing efforts to improve awareness and coordination of existing resources, expand access to education and support services, and increase access to culturally responsive perinatal support, including doula services. Doulas provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant individuals and their families, and have been shown to improve birth outcomes, particularly for women of color. Expanding access to doula services is a key component of promoting health equity and addressing disparities in maternal care.

Collaboration and Funding for a Healthier Chicopee

The steering committee for ACT is comprised of a diverse group of stakeholders, including resident advisors and representatives from key organizations such as Baystate Health, Breaking Oppression, the city of Chicopee, the Chicopee Health Department, the Chicopee City Council, the Chicopee Parks and Recreation Department, the Chicopee Chamber of Commerce, Elms College, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Holyoke Health Center, Tapestry Health, and the Valley Opportunity Council. This broad representation ensures that the coalition’s efforts are informed by a wide range of perspectives and expertise.

The project is financially supported by a grant from the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation, demonstrating a commitment from the private sector to address health inequities in the region.
