Online store Coolblue wants to conquer the energy market in the coming years. One of the plans: washing machines that work for free because they automatically start running only at the most favorable time.

According to Coolblue boss Pieter Zwart, the ‘free’ washing machine is not something of the future, but the product is really under development. “We are talking to manufacturers, and it will be on the market very soon,” he says in the FD today. Coolblue is already the largest seller of washing machines in the Netherlands and since 2021 the company also offers solar panels and charging stations.
Coolblue wants its customers to automatically benefit from the most favorable energy prices. According to Zwart, Coolblue Energy is therefore ‘the only energy company that wants to sell less energy’. When there is a lot of wind or sun, wind turbines and solar panels generate so much electricity that the price is zero or sometimes even negative. If the washing machine only starts running at that moment, you pay nothing for energy consumption. “The goal is to put a washing machine on the market that washes for free,” says Zwart.
In addition, Coolblue wants to sell more home batteries for solar energy storage in the coming years.

Anyone know a slogan?
Many details of the plan have yet to be determined. The washing machine may be linked to a subscription, so you actually rent the device. And it is obvious that Coolblue will also apply the same concept to dishwashers and tumble dryers, and possibly also to charging stations for charging electric cars.
As usual at Coolblue, every new product or service also comes with a supposedly funny slogan. For the time being that is: happy power, a variation on happy hour in the pub.
