Couple Arrested After Five Newborn Babies’ Remains Found in Orange Apartment

A medical visit in southern France has uncovered one of the country’s most grim domestic cases. The discovery of human remains hidden inside a residence in the city of Orange triggered an immediate criminal inquiry by prosecutors, according to international reporting from the region.

The Discovery in Orange and the Hospital Visit

The sequence of events began when a woman went to a hospital in Orange complaining of stomach pain. She gave birth to a baby at the medical facility during her visit, the public broadcaster reported. Alarmed by the unexpected development, her 32-year-old partner returned to their home and began searching the premises. Inside a wardrobe, he found cardboard boxes containing human remains.

The partner immediately alerted hospital staff, who in turn notified local authorities. A preliminary examination of the site revealed that the remains included bone fragments and the body of an infant in a state of decomposition. Police and judicial authorities subsequently confirmed that the remains of five newborn babies in total had been recovered from the apartment.

Arrests and the Ongoing Investigation in France

Following her discharge from the hospital, the mother was taken into custody. Her partner was also arrested hours later. Investigators established that the couple already shared two young children. Justitie has started an investigation into the murder of a child under the age of fifteen.

During initial questioning, the partner told investigators that he had no knowledge of his partner’s pregnancies. The mother’s legal defense and medical evaluation are expected to center around the psychological condition known as denial of pregnancy, a phenomenon in which a woman remains entirely unaware that she is carrying a child and her body displays minimal physical symptoms. Research indicates this condition occurs in approximately one out of every 500 pregnancies.

As criminal investigators examine the timeline and circumstances surrounding the deaths, child protection services have stepped in to manage the immediate welfare of the family. The public prosecutor’s office engaged child welfare agencies to provide shelter and care for the couple’s two older children. Additionally, prosecutors requested that a juvenile judge determine the legal status and care arrangements for the newborn son delivered at the hospital on the night the discovery unfolded.

The case is being treated by French authorities as one of the most severe instances of infanticide in France, drawing intense scrutiny as investigators work to establish the chronology of the hidden births.
