Did the creator of NieR: Automata hint at a sequel?

Taro Yoko might get a chance to make a sequel to the best-selling NieR: Automata.

During the Nier London Concert, the creator of the franchise may have hinted at this. Although NieR has been an IP since the PlayStation 3 (which originally started as a spin-off of another, Drakengard), the success of NieR: Automata made the series popular (and there’s no better proof of that than the 8 million+ sales). Taro’s unusual and eccentric game design and writing style also played a big role in this. The franchise has recently received an anime adaptation in addition to the written stories and concerts, and this has left fans rightfully wondering when there will be a new AAA game that will either be a sequel to NieR: Automata or set in the world of the game?

Since the re-release of NieR: Replicant in 2021, Taro has often said that he wants to do a new episode. However, after Replicant, he worked on other, smaller projects. He worked on moblios RPGs, or the Voice of Cards series, for example. Nevertheless, he couldn’t forget NieR either, as a user named SanTheSly revealed on the ResetEra forum what was discussed at the London concert.

Next to Taro, Kiryu Takashi, the president of Square Enix, also appeared. Taro said on stage that if the audience wanted a sequel to NieR: Automata, they would give it the biggest ovation of the night so far. This happened, as the entire concert hall burst into applause and cheers. This doesn’t mean anything by itself, but throughout the show’s history, the word repent has often popped up in dialogue, but the last time it ended up being R3PENT. This is a reference to the lettered endings of NieR: Automata, and the number 3 may indicate that the third main NieR episode may be in the works.

Square Enix is hopefully working on something, but since Taro worked together with PlatinumGames on NieR: Automata, there might be some changes here.
