From Ruthless Manager to Reluctant friend: My Dispatch Roleplaying Journey
Dispatch, the innovative text-based RPG from Adhoc Studio, promised a unique challenge: manage a team of washed-up superheroes, making tough decisions about thier careers and, sometimes, their very existence. I approached it intending to be a hard-nosed executive. What unfolded, however, was a surprisingly heartwarming experience that completely subverted my expectations.
Initially, the premise was clear. As Robert, a “Dispatcher,” you oversee the Z-Team – a motley crew of former heroes now relegated to handling mundane tasks for a shadowy corporation. The game’s third chapter presented my first real test: cut either Sonar, the crypto-obsessed bat, or Coupé, the lethal flying assassin, to make room for a new hire.
it should have been a logical decision.sonar was demonstrably less effective than Coupé. Yet, I found myself paralyzed.
The Unexpected Pull of Character
Sonar’s backstory resonated. He’d previously pleaded for a chance to pitch ideas to a character clearly inspired by Elon Musk, desperately seeking validation. He needed a purpose beyond lurking on Reddit. I couldn’t bring myself to discard him.
This decision marked a turning point. I realized I lacked the stomach for being the villain. The Z-Team weren’t just pixels on a screen; they were surprisingly endearing characters. Their quirks and vulnerabilities quickly grew on me, making ruthless roleplaying impossible.
Even when forced to fill Coupé’s vacated spot,I resisted the obvious choice. Offered a Superman analogue, I instead selected Water Boy – a clumsy janitor with the power to violently vomit water. He was a disaster waiting to happen, but his unwavering optimism was infectious.
Dispatch: More Than Just a Game
Dispatch isn’t about maximizing efficiency or building a superhero empire. It’s about the relationships you forge with these flawed, fascinating characters.
* Compelling Writing: The game’s dialog is sharp, witty, and genuinely funny.
* Endearing Characters: Each member of the Z-Team has a unique personality and backstory.
* Unexpected Emotional Depth: You’ll find yourself genuinely caring about their well-being.
My Robert transformed from a calculating manager into a monumental softie. I couldn’t inflict hardship on these lovable losers. My initial experiment in tough-love roleplay dissolved into a weekly hangout with a group of super-powered misfits.
And honestly? I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Dispatch proved that sometimes, the most rewarding experiences come from embracing kindness and connection, even in the most unexpected places.
