Domien Verschuuren sought psychological help because he increasingly had arguments with people around him, he said in the AD. “As far as I’m concerned, the fact that the afternoon program went so well was always thanks to my colleagues. If we received compliments from management, I thought: that was because of the rest at Q. I was a saboteur of my own happiness. I also started arguing more and more with people I love; my mother, my girlfriend. If they criticized me, I took it too personally, while they tried to help me. I never said sorry. I have been reminded of this many times. I had to communicate more. That started to become a big knot in my head. I had to do something with it.”

And so he sought help. “I burst into tears – very classically – on the sofa of a psychologist.” He had lived too long for the stage. “Then I thought: okay, I’ll buy a cool car with big rims now, because then people will see that I’m successful. Or I thought it was important to hang out in bus shelters, because then people know that you are successful. My psychologist turned it around. She said: me hanging there was a result of the success. I had a super ego and was insecure at the same time.”

The psychologist advised him to talk to his mother. “I used to be very quick-tempered, bordering on unmanageable. I had to find out where that came from.”

To perform

It turned out that there was too much pressure on performance. “It always had to be better. My parents thought a good grade list was important. My mother always says she raised my sister and me in loving neglect. That has turned me into something of a fighter.” Little Domien was quickly let go and did things himself. But if that went wrong, he would be told. “That’s why I’m used to doing everything myself and solving it myself. I have been afraid to ask for help for a long time. Fortunately, my mother and I were able to talk about it.”
