Former Prime Minister DutchDries van Agt, died at the age of 93 through euthanasia by lethal injection with his wife, Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg.

Van Agt was euthanized because he had been sick for a long time. He died together with his wife holding hands.

“He died holding hands with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg, a supporter and news anchor with whom he had been together for more than 70 years and whom he always referred to as ‘my girl’,” reported The Rights Forum, as quoted by AP News.

Reporting from Associated Press, news of Van Agt’s death was reported by The Rights Forum on February 9. The forum said the former PM and his wife died on February 5 and would be buried in a private ceremony in the city of Nijmegen.

Both died due to euthanasia, which is the act of intentionally ending someone’s life in order to relieve their suffering. This procedure is usually carried out on sufferers of diseases that are medically impossible to cure.

Van Agt and his wife had been sick for a long time. In 2019, Van Agt suffered a brain hemorrhage while giving a speech at a memorial event for Palestine and never fully recovered.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte expressed his condolences on Van Agt’s passing.

“With his flowery and unique language, his clear convictions and his presentations, Dries Van Agt gives color and substance to Dutch politics in a time of polarization and party renewal,” Rutte said in a statement.
