LEEUWARDEN – The Frisian Provincial Council has voted against an active rainbow policy with a small majority. That was also the proposal of the Board of Provincial Executive (GS). Not all coalition parties agreed with the council, because the Fryske National Party (FNP) did want policy to be drawn up.

GS does not want to pursue an active policy to emancipate the LGBTI community, because according to deputy Femke Wiersma (BBB), this is a task for the municipalities. The province wants to continue to implement an internal rainbow policy and include this in other policy points. The approximately 50,000 euros that had been set aside for this will flow back into the general reserves.

Two amendments, from D66 and from Christian Union, just missed the mark. Danny van der Weijde of D66 stated in an amendment, together with many other parties, that a motion from 2022 must be followed up with actual policy. The Christian Union wanted the rainbow policy to be broader, so that other groups could also be helped with discrimination.

Emotionally charged

A committee meeting on the same topic two weeks ago was emotionally charged, with many personal stories. In the Provincial Council the stories were less emotional, but the Members of Parliament treated the subject and each other with more respect than usual. Everyone also seemed to have the same idea: equality for everyone. However, the left-wing parties in particular believe that an active policy should be pursued for this, while other parties said that this is laid down in the constitution and belongs to the municipality.
