It will happen to you: you rent out a summer house and the tenant smears everything with shit. It happened to Charlene Glas (39) from Egmond aan Zee. She already had a strange feeling about the man, but it was still a shock that it would turn out this way. It also turns out that she is not the only victim of the horror tenant.
Charlene and her husband have been renting out a small holiday home next to their own house for twenty years. Last Tuesday, a new customer reported that he had a leak and was looking for temporary housing.
Excuses
“I immediately had a strange feeling about it,” says Charlene. “On the agreed day, he kept not showing up for the key and payment. When he finally arrived, he had no cash with him. In the end, we let him sleep. He would pay the next day.”
But the next day the man came up with excuses again. “We then decided to send him away. With a lot of effort we got our money and we thought it was done.”

But it was far from over: Charlene’s husband discovered a huge mess in the holiday home. Sheets were stained on the couch and shit was on the toilet seat. She posted photos of the devastation on Facebook to warn other landlords.
Not the only one
It is now raining comments under that message. In the coastal village, many residents have a summer house for rental in the backyard. Several had been visited by the horror tenant. “Terrible. Antisocial. Not normal. Scandalous,” it reads, but also: “Thank you for sharing this” and “thanks for the warning.” And rental companies and holiday parks in the Egmonden also indicate – unfortunately – that they know the man.
“We had a loss of 2,000 euros due to this bastard,” an Egmond resident tells NH. She wants to remain anonymous because ‘he knows where we live’. “It was with us a few weeks ago and we were then able to replace the entire interior.”
Everything was covered in poop and things had been demolished. “The TV, the couch, duvets, pillows. A tragedy. He did pay the rent, but when I confronted him with the damage he became very angry. I was alone with him in the house and was too afraid to tell him any further. force to pay.”

The man tries to find accommodation via Booking, among other things. He calls others directly to make a reservation. “I reported everything to Booking and asked for help,” says the anonymous Egmondse. “But they said they couldn’t do anything. Incomprehensible, you can block someone, right? They gave a tip to increase the deposit. But a deposit of thousands of euros is of course not realistic.”
NH has also contacted Booking and asked, among other things, what the reservation website is doing to protect landlords against guests who leave a mess or do not pay. The company says it cannot yet respond substantively, but will do so as soon as possible. “We take every complaint seriously and investigate the issues raised.”
Report or report
Charlene and the anonymous Egmondse understand that the man comes from Amsterdam and leads an itinerant life. “He would have been arrested more than once and would have many more crimes under his belt.” The police cannot yet confirm this to NH.
In any case, the police recommend that you report or report a situation like this. “This way we can build up a file. We are also concerned about the well-being of this man, and it appears that he (also) needs help.”
