immunization starts today in DF; understand what it will be like

The first shipment of dengue vaccines arrived in the Federal District in the early afternoon of Thursday (8/2). In total, 71,708 doses were delivered — less than half of what was predicted at a press conference held by the government of the Federal District (GDF), on Wednesday. The expectation was that 194 thousand doses would arrive, but the local Executive reinforced that the shipments will be sent little by little. With the low transfer, the Department of Health announced that only children aged 10 and 11 will be among the first vaccinated.

The date for the next batch of vaccines to arrive, however, has not yet been defined. The vice-governor, Celina Leão (PP), and the Secretary of Health, Lucilene Florêncio, went to Rede de Frio, located in Guará, to receive the doses. “We are now awaiting guidance from the Ministry of Health to find out how we will carry out immunization. With the 194 thousand doses, it would be enough to vaccinate our entire population aged between 10 and 14 years. With the reduction in the number of doses, the We are waiting for new guidance from the MS, to know if we can vaccinate the entire population or if we should classify by risk area”, said the vice-governor.

The Health Secretary added that there were customs problems when the vaccine arrived in Brazil. “It was informed by the MS that there was a problem at customs, but the doses will arrive as they pass inspection. We will administer these 71 thousand doses and then we will adjust the internal process, according to the receipt of new doses”, stated Lucilene.

Even so, the Secretary of Health confirmed that vaccination against dengue will begin today, in some points spread across the country’s capital. “Vaccination starts tomorrow (today). At 7 am, the doses will be at the points that the secretariat will make available”, she reinforced.

Comorbidities

While receiving the doses, Celina Leão spoke about the deaths of Brasilia residents. “It is important to say that, of the 11 deaths, nine were people with comorbidities. I spoke about this yesterday with the Minister (of Health). Maybe take all the data from Brazil and reevaluate who we are applying it to,” she said. “I don’t know if this materializes in other states, but, in DF, those who are dying are those who have comorbidities”, stated the vice-governor. Celina added that Minister Nísia Trindade will take the matter to be analyzed by the technical committee of the Ministry of Health.

Busy tents

The government of the Federal District (GDF) will increase the number of tents to welcome the population from nine to 20. The structures designed to treat patients with suspected cases of dengue will be installed in 11 new addresses.

The new facilities will begin operating from the end of next week in Vicente Pires, Varjão, Gama, Taguatinga, Guará, Plano Piloto, Paranoá, Planaltina and Águas Claras. Ceilândia and Samambaia, which already have the structure, will also benefit from another reception tent, totaling 20 structures in the DF.

Yesterday afternoon, Correio visited the Ceilândia tent, where around 250 patients with dengue symptoms are being treated per day, and around seven evacuations are made to hospitals and UPAs. As it is a region with one of the highest incidences of cases, the tent is one of the busiest in the DF. Since the Air Force Field Hospital (HCamp) is located nearby, the Health Department is working on relocating patients so that care is balanced between the two units. In Ceilândia, the team of health professionals has the support of nursing technician course students who are providing support in screening.

Yesterday alone, the Ceilândia structure received 10 patients awaiting treatment at HCamp. This is the case of legal assistant Thalita Gabriela, 31 years old. “I was waiting for treatment at the Field Hospital and they offered me a ride to come and be treated here at the tent. We came in the Health Department’s car,” she said. “As I’m on the second day of symptoms, they didn’t do the test. But I’m waiting to be medicated and hydrated with serum,” she added.

After trying to get treatment at the Taguatinga Regional Hospital (HRT), security guard Agdo Ávila, 37, was taken to the Ceilândia tent with his wife and two children, aged three and six. The eldest son had a birthday the day before, but the family was unable to celebrate because the children had strong symptoms of dengue fever. “My two children have a fever of 39 degrees, headache and nausea, they vomited several times,” he reported.

The situation in private hospitals does not seem to be very different from the public health network in DF. Housewife Livoneide de Oliveira, 52, took her daughter to a private hospital on Wednesday night, but, after waiting more than two hours, they decided to return home. Yesterday, they went to the Ceilândia tent to try to provide assistance. “It’s happening faster here. My daughter is getting worse, with a lot of fever, body pain and skin lesions because of the itching,” she said.

Hcamp

The Air Force reinforced that care at the Field Hospital (HCamp), set up next to the Emergency Care Unit I, in Ceilândia, is exclusive to patients with dengue or symptoms of the disease. According to the Air Force, between February 5th and yesterday, at 6pm, 5,004 consultations were carried out, including medical clinic, pediatrics, emergencies, laboratory tests, among others.

According to Major Juliana Vandesteen, the recommendation for people with other illnesses is to seek a health center. Furthermore, the soldier stated, in a press conference yesterday, that the majority of patients treated at the unit are mild cases.

At the time, the major assessed that HCamp receives many people daily, but the majority are mild cases of the disease. “We met the demand and expected an average of 600 (patients) in this situation. We really overcame it and were very surprised by the high demand in this location, which is not just patients from Ceilândia. Many patients have come from outside of here to look for HCamp”, said the soldier.

Asked about the expansion of service, the soldier stated that HCamp is adapting to service according to need and demand. “This issue of expansion is not ours to define now.”

Regarding on-site care, Juliana Vandesteen highlighted that the purpose of the hospital is to exclusively treat dengue cases. “It is important that this is very clear. What has happened is that patients have been arriving who are not suspected of having dengue. This puts a burden on care. So, I even ask that these patients with other symptoms seek out health centers”, he appealed.

According to the DF Health Department (SES-DF), the main symptoms of dengue are: malaise, fatigue, high fever (above 38ºC), pain in the body, behind the eyes, head and joints. Other symptoms that may appear are vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and spots on the body. There are also asymptomatic cases or with the presence of just one of these signs. After being bitten by an infected mosquito, the first symptoms of dengue appear between four and 10 days.

“As it is a mild case, he will be guided and treated at home. Group B and C cases, we welcome, care for and hydrate. If it is necessary to transfer, we will transfer. If everything is fine and he improves with the hydration, we’ll provide guidance and he’ll go home”, explained the major.
