Anticipation is being witnessed in the fish market in Egypt, with the continuation of the campaign to boycott fish in Egypt from the city of Port Said under the slogan “Let it rot» As a response to the significant increase in fish prices, the campaign partially succeeded in achieving its goals, as it led to a decrease in the prices of some types of fish.
The campaign extended to include other governorates, such as Alexandria, Sharkia, Beni Suef, Suez, and Gharbia. The coordinator of the Fish Boycott Initiative in Port Said announced that the campaign would continue even after the end of Sham El Nessim.
This campaign comes after fish prices rose in an unprecedented manner, as the price of a kilo of fish reached 250 pounds, the price of sardines reached 150 pounds, and the price of shrimp reached a thousand pounds, and the merchants and fishermen refused to reduce prices in response to the demands of the people.
The price of tilapia has reached 30 pounds after it reached 100 and 200 pounds. However, citizens still refrain from buying and will remain so until prices completely decrease and reach numbers that suit them and suit all low-income people, according to what the coordinator of the “Let It Rot” campaign said.
Wissam El-Safty, coordinator of the “Let It Rot” fish boycott initiative in Port Said, said that the boycott was for a week, but it was decided to continue until after the end of Sham El-Nessim.
Al-Safti added, during a phone call to the “Happening in Egypt” program on MBC Misr satellite channel, on Tuesday evening, that there are 11 governorates in solidarity with the fish boycott initiative in Port Said.
He pointed out that fish prices have risen excessively in the recent period, continuing: “When I am a citizen of a coastal city and I do not know how to eat fish, something is wrong, and it must be addressed.”
He explained that the initiative to boycott fish in Port Said came after their attempts with merchants to reduce prices failed.
The coordinator of the Port Said Fish Boycott Initiative appealed to the owners of seafood restaurants in Cairo to join the initiative, noting that fish prices decreased by about 50% after the campaign.
Last Monday, Major General Adel Al-Ghadban, Governor of Port Said, visited Rebekah and Al-Sayed Al-Sijini, head of the Consumer Protection Agency, in the markets in the governorate to control the prices of goods.
The governor and his companions inspected food commodities inside Downtown Port Said Bazaar, and stressed sellers not to manipulate prices, and to adhere to the reduced prices of food commodities in accordance with the Prime Minister’s directives.
And he rose Governor of Port Said Major General Adel Al-Ghadhban today announced his support for the boycott and his bias towards the citizen by refusing to enter the fish market today, saying, “I will not enter until the prices go down and the fish is sold to the ordinary citizen at a fair and real price.” This comes during his tour with the head of the Consumer Protection Agency to a number of markets to control prices. Goods.
A large number of fish shop owners announced a reduction in prices on the second day of the boycott. The price of shrimp and white cucumber decreased from 100 to 30 pounds, and the price of mullet was also reduced from 120 to 60 pounds. Despite this, the citizens decided to continue the boycott and refuse to buy, and today’s offers. One by the merchants to try to thwart the boycott.
The fish boycott campaign extended from Port Said Governorate to Alexandria Governorate under the slogan “Let it rot.”
Haj Fouad Al-Shaarawy, a fish trader in the customs department in Alexandria, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the campaign undoubtedly affected the buying and selling movement in Alexandria, but to a small extent, especially since the movement itself “has been at a standstill since Eid Al-Fitr” until now.
He added that the boycott that was launched in Port Said was tendentious and not realistic, especially since the fish merchants were collecting the mullet fish found in Port Said, which is the type of cut mullet that is used in salting to be eaten at Sham El Nessim. Consequently, there was a thirst for the market for mullet, and from there a crisis occurred in the rise in prices. He called for launching a campaign to boycott fish, but in Alexandria there are 4 types of mullet.
He continued: “In Alexandria, the market is very tired and exhausted, and after Ramadan, prices were lower than during Ramadan and decreased by 50%, and the demand was weak, and the fish of the rich decreased by 75%, as the price of tilapia decreased from 100 pounds to 70 pounds, and 60 pounds, and basaria to 20 pounds, and bourboni from 340 pounds in Ramadan to 240 pounds now.”
As for Gamal Zaqzouq, head of the Consumer Protection Association in Alexandria, he told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the boycott was a great success in Alexandria, noting that he conducted a tour of some markets, including the Bakos Market, and discussed with the fish merchants themselves, and monitored a broad response from citizens to the boycott.
