MUMBAI, KOMPAS.com – Indian police detained a pigeon for eight months because they suspected it was a Chinese spy.

However, quoted from the AFP news agency on Friday (2/2/2024), the pigeon was later released after being declared clean from suspicion.

The bird was caught in the harbor of the financial city of Mumbai with writing similar to Chinese characters on its wings, the Times of India reported.

“Initially, the police filed a spying case for the bird, but after completing the investigation, they withdrew the charges,” the report continued.

The unnamed bird was kept in a cage at a city hospital while police investigated.

The Office for the Public Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in India on Thursday (1/2/2024) admitted that it could not understand why the investigation could take eight months.

PETA India said the police gave official permission to the hospital to release the pigeons on Wednesday (31/1/2024).

According to local media reports, the pigeon was flying freely in good health.

The pigeon is the latest of several birds detained by Indian authorities on suspicion of espionage.
