Massive Jellyfish Swarm Forces Shutdown at Gravelines Nuclear Plant
An unexpected influx of jellyfish disrupted operations at the Gravelines nuclear power plant in northern France on Monday, forcing operators to shut down three of the facility’s six reactors. The massive swarm of marine creatures clogged the intake pumps responsible for drawing cooling water from the sea, prompting an immediate safety response from plant operator Électricité de France (EDF).
The unusual biological disruption significantly limited power generation at Western Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. In addition to the three reactors completely taken offline, the output of a fourth reactor was halved, leaving only a single unit operating at full capacity during the incident. A sixth reactor at the Gravelines facility was already unavailable due to scheduled maintenance prior to the jellyfish arrival.
Safety Assurances Amid Severe Power Reductions
Despite the sudden multi-reactor shutdown, EDF issued a public statement emphasizing that the installation’s core safety margins were never compromised. Plant engineers utilized standard operational procedures to safely curtail output rather than managing an internal reactor malfunction.
“This situation has no impact on the safety of the installation, the safety of personnel, or the environment,” the company stated.
Coastal Vulnerabilities and Environmental Pressures
Earlier in the year, severe summer heatwaves and prolonged droughts forced EDF to temporarily scale back electricity production across several reactor sites in June and July to comply with environmental regulations governing thermal discharge into local waterways. While thermal constraints are tied to high atmospheric temperatures, Monday’s shutdown stemmed purely from physical blockages caused by marine organisms drawn into the intake channels.
