German authorities defused a drone carrying an explosive device discovered near a runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport on Tuesday night, prompting the temporary closure of both runways and leading Germany’s interior minister to warn of a dangerous new threat scenario to the nation’s critical transport and logistics infrastructure.
An airport employee first spotted the flying object near the south runway shortly before midnight on Tuesday, according to regional police and prosecutors. An anti-explosives robot was deployed to examine the device, and authorities successfully removed its detonator. The discovery forced the closure of both runways at the major freight hub, diverting several flights, including a passenger plane, to other airports.
Federal Investigation and Hybrid Attack Assessment
Federal investigators took over the case on Thursday evening, reflecting the severity of the security breach. The Spolkový kriminálny úrad and the general prosecutor’s office assumed jurisdiction over the inquiry. The prosecutor’s office stated that this was a serious attack on transport and logistics infrastructure in Germany, noting that the perpetrators intended to disrupt both the external and internal security of the country.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt cut short his vacation to travel to the Leipzig airport. Addressing reporters at the scene, he characterized the incident as a hybrid attack scenario,
and pointed to the gravity of the weaponized aircraft.

He described the culprits as highly professional operators while declining to rule out the involvement of foreign powers.
Runway Closures and the Mid-Air Collision
The security operation disrupted regional air traffic immediately. The north runway reopened after approximately two hours, while the south runway was already slated for scheduled maintenance on Wednesday. A freight airplane that aborted its landing because of the runway closure subsequently suffered a mid-air collision with an apparent second flying object, according to regional police and prosecutors. The freight aircraft flew to Hannover, located about 200 kilometers (125 miles) to the northwest, where officials discovered minor damage.
Armin Schuster, the regional interior minister of Saxony state, confirmed that authorities were actively searching the area for parts of a possible second drone. By Friday morning, security forces had not identified or apprehended any suspects.
Strategic Importance of Leipzig/Halle Airport
Leipzig/Halle Airport functions as a vital logistics center for both commercial freight and military operations. The facility handles operations for Ukrainian Antonov transport aircraft, which relocated their complete fleet to the Saxon airport following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to reporting from Spiegel, these aircraft routinely transport military equipment and supplies for NATO, the Bundeswehr, and Ukraine.
The incident echoes previous security breaches at European logistics hubs. In 2024, an incendiary device ignited at a logistics center at the Leipzig airport, setting fire to a freight container in a plot that Western security officials suspect was orchestrated by Russian intelligence. Western intelligence agencies have repeatedly accused Moscow and its proxies of orchestrating dozens of sabotage attempts and hybrid incidents across Europe since the escalation of the conflict four years ago.
