After navigating a difficult debut period and making a handful of appearances in the latter half of the 2024–25 campaign, Khusanov seized his opportunity when defensive injuries mounted during the 2025–26 season. Following fitness issues for Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, the young defender formed a reliable centre-back partnership with Marc Guéhi. He started 16 of the final 19 Premier League fixtures, helping anchor a defense that claimed both the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Khusanov’s extension follows a new four-year deal signed by England forward Phil Foden earlier in the week, marking a concerted effort by club management to secure their leading talent. The proactive stance comes as City look to avoid prolonged contract standoffs of the kind seen with Rodri, whose future has drawn heavy interest from Real Madrid. Alongside Khusanov and Foden, discussions have reportedly advanced regarding renewals for Jeremy Doku and Josko Gvardiol.
