Marianne Vos (Visma) has shown her power to win on the final wall of Sigüenza and add her second victory in this 2024 women’s Vuelta, a day marked again by the fans after which the also Dutch Demi Vollering (SD Worx) continues to lead.
The big favorites (for partial victory and in the end) have not failed in this seventh and penultimate stagewhich has been exciting especially in the final part when the windthe narrow roads and the push of the strongest cyclists in the race have caused nerves, cuts and dangerous situations.
From the start in San Esteban de Gormaz (Soria), attacks continued with the Spanish teams Laboral Kutxa and Eneicat determined to be present on a getaway
The Basque team with Laura Tomasi achieved it, but the septet that was formed barely exceeded a minute advantage despite the fact that none of the runners were dangerous for the general classification.
Halfway through the stage, with the threat of side wind, the tension and pace increased in the peloton and the breakaways were put to the test, although one persisted in her efforts, none other than Anna Kiesenhofer (Roland).
The Olympic champion was joined in a counterattack by eight other runners, again without contenders for the final victory and among them again Tonetti and, this time, Carolina Vargas as a representative of Eneicat. Good news to compensate for the retirement due to a fall of Andrea Alzate, who had been the protagonist at the beginning of the day.
The second part, for the leaders
But the adventure ended for everyone with the battle that arose after the turn in Barahona to enter a secondary road where the wind became more relevant 40 km from the finish line.
In it fan that was formed at the head, all the runners who were in the top-10 of the general, with with the exception of the Yara Kastelijn (Phoenix). As in the fourth stage on the way to Zaragoza, once again the leaders of the line had to work hard to avoid being cut off without ports in between, although this time the terrain was more leg-breaking.
And although in the last kilometers the attacks continued, no one was able to escape and everything was decided in the hard final ramp in the town of Sigüenza.
There, without surprises, Vos has achieved his second victory in this edition after the one in Teruel (in the third stage) and he has already been a professional for 255 years.
In the general classification, Vollering leads the Italian Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl) by 52 seconds and the also Dutch Riejanne Markus (Visma) by 1:14.
On Sunday, the last stage will go from Madrid capital to Valdesquí for a route of only 90 kilometers but with a very demanding finish in the Sierra de Guadarrama, with the chain of the first category ports of La Morcuera and Cotos.
