Rhule’s Focus Remains on Nebraska Despite Penn State Buzz, Gophers Prepare for Battle
The Nebraska cornhuskers are showing promising signs of improvement, recently securing a road victory at Maryland. However, as they prepare to face the Minnesota Gophers this Friday at 7 p.m.at Huntington Bank Stadium, a different topic dominates the conversation: Coach Matt Rhule‘s potential candidacy for the recently vacated penn State head coaching position.
James Franklin’s dismissal on sunday has ignited speculation, fueled by Rhule’s strong ties to the Nittany Lions programme. he played linebacker there from 1994-1997 and previously worked alongside penn State Athletics Director Pat kraft at Temple University from 2013-2016.
Despite the allure of his alma mater, Rhule has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Nebraska. “I absolutely love it here,” he stated during his Monday press conference. He envisions building a dominant program in Lincoln, emphasizing the exceptional facilities and passionate fanbase.
Rhule acknowledged his affection for Penn State and his respect for both Kraft and Franklin, but quickly pivoted back to the task at hand.”I’m really happy here and excited to get going this week on Minnesota,” he said.

Beyond the Penn State narrative, a strong relationship exists between Rhule and Minnesota’s head coach, P.J. Fleck. The two are considered close colleagues within the Big Ten coaching fraternity.
They share a common interest outside of football, having attended a Kenny Chesney concert at the Sphere in Las Vegas last summer. This weekend, both coaches are uniting for a cause, raising awareness for breast cancer.
Fleck highlighted Rhule’s character, noting their offseason discussions about collaborating on the initiative.”I think it says a lot about him and where his heart is always at,” Fleck commented.
Recruiting Implications: Petersohn’s Future
The coaching change at Penn State could also impact recruiting. Triton High School athlete Pierce Petersohn, Minnesota’s No. 2 in-state recruit for the 2026 class, initially committed to the Nittany Lions in June.
Franklin’s vision for Petersohn involved playing him at tight end. Conversely, the Gophers had planned to utilize his talents at linebacker. This shift could possibly reopen the door for Minnesota to land the highly sought-after recruit.
Minnesota previously secured a commitment from jackson County Central’s Roman Voss, the state’s top recruit, with a promise of playing time at tight end.

on the field, the Gophers are navigating some challenges in their secondary. Injuries to cornerbacks Mike Gerald and Naiim Parrish forced nickel back Jai’Onte’ McMillan into a larger role during the 27-20 victory over Purdue.
McMillan delivered a crucial performance, recording four tackles and a game-saving pass break-up in the end zone with just two minutes remaining. Fleck praised McMillan’s selflessness and commitment.
“I’m just really proud of the selfless teammate that he is,” Fleck said. He also expressed confidence in the team’s depth at the position, while acknowledging the need for healthy returns.
