The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) recorded 24,344 deaths from malaria in 2023 compared to 24,880 in 2022, the Minister of Public Health, Roger Kamba, announced on Thursday.

“Our country recorded 27,657,762 cases of malaria and recorded 24,344 deaths due mainly to malaria, i.e. a slight upward trend in the number of cases and downward trend in the number of deaths,” the minister said in his message to the nation. on the occasion of the 17th World Malaria Day, also informing the introduction of the R21/Matrix-M vaccine in the coming days.

“The introduction in the coming days in our country of the R21/Matrix-M vaccine recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the fight against malaria is part of this logic. This vaccine, the effects of which are satisfactory is cited today as an example of innovation in health and a scientific breakthrough to put an end to this endemic in infants and children under five years old,” he highlighted.

Since October 2, 2023, the RTS, S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M vaccines have been recommended by the WHO to prevent malaria in children, observers recall.

The “Global Malaria Report 2023” released in November 2023 by WHO states that the phased deployment in Malawi, Ghana and Kenya of RTS,S/AS01 has shown promising results. According to the document, a rigorous assessment reveals a significant decline in severe malaria and a 13% reduction in deaths among young children in vaccinated areas.
