Nithya Raman Enters Los Angeles Mayoral Race
Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman officially announced her candidacy for Mayor of Los Angeles on Saturday, February 7, 2026.Raman, representing the cityS 4th District since 2020, is campaigning on a platform of accountability, proactive problem-solving, and increased affordability for Los Angeles residents.
A Focus on City Challenges
Raman’s announcement speech highlighted what she described as a “breaking point” for Los Angeles. She pointed to the escalating cost of housing, a strained and reactive homelessness response system, and concerns about public safety as key issues facing the city. She argued that residents are being asked to accept diminished services while facing increased costs, a situation she deems unsustainable.
“Los Angeles is at a breaking point, and people feel it in the most basic ways,” Raman stated. “Housing costs are forcing families out of the city, a homelessness system that lacks clear ownership and accountability is leaving people stuck in crisis while the city cycles from emergency to emergency. too many people don’t feel safe walking down their own blocks at night, even as crime comes down because broken street lights stay broken and the city can’t seem to manage the basics.”
Key Policy Proposals
raman’s campaign centers on a commitment to demanding accountability from all city departments, proactively preparing for emergencies, and prioritizing both the creation of more housing and its affordability. She believes a shift in leadership is necessary to address these challenges effectively.
“We’re asking residents to accept less while paying more and calling that normal; it isn’t,” she asserted.”This is a city of remarkable possibility, but possibility only matters if our leadership is accountable for delivering it. I’m ready to lead this city with the seriousness, accountability, urgency, and ambition that this moment demands.”
