NS multi-trip discount tickets will soon no longer be sold at station vending machines. From now on, season ticket holders must create a QR code in the NS app and share it with the ‘passengers’. They can then buy a discount ticket with the code on the NS site or in the app.

The change takes effect today, but travelers can still use the old way until April 22. From that moment on, you can only travel via the code.

Season ticket holders have been able to allow up to three people to travel with NS for a long time with a 40 percent discount. This is only possible during so-called off-peak hours, when the train is less busy.

Traveling is intended as a service to travelers, but NS has noticed that it is often abused. For example, conductors regularly encounter passengers who say that the season ticket holder has just gotten off or who do not know the name of the season ticket holder. There are also travelers who buy a ticket with a travel discount and then look for someone on the train with a season ticket.

We travel by train almost 30 million times a month. Half a million times that is with a travel discount.
