“After the Hunt” Premieres at NYFF: A night of Dialogue, Dolby Atmos, and New Leadership
The 63rd New York Film Festival kicked off with a compelling premiere of Luca Guadagnino‘s After the Hunt, followed by a revealing 15-minute Q&A session. The event marked not only a cinematic debut but also a transition in leadership for Film at Lincoln Centre. Here’s a detailed look at the opening night and what it signals for the future of the festival.
A Candid Q&A Following After the Hunt
The screening was immediately followed by a lively discussion moderated by NYFF Artistic Director dennis Lim. Present were Guadagnino, Julia Roberts, and key cast members including Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, alongside screenwriter Nora Garrett.
One particularly memorable moment involved Garfield openly discussing the discomfort of portraying a scene with sexually aggressive undertones opposite Roberts. He expressed relief that the challenging sequence was captured in a single take, dryly noting it was “not, in any way shape or form, pleasant.” This honesty offered a glimpse into the complexities of performance and the dedication to authenticity within the film.
Release Details & technical Innovation
Amazon MGM Studios will release After the Hunt in select theaters on October 10th, with a wider release planned for the following week.
This year’s opening night also showcased a significant upgrade to the viewing experience at Alice Tully Hall. The screening was the first to utilize the new Dolby Atmos sound system, boasting 120 strategically placed speakers. Guadagnino’s renowned attention to soundtrack detail, coupled with a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, directly influenced the installation of this cutting-edge technology.
A changing of the Guard at Film at Lincoln Center
The festival’s opening also signaled a shift in leadership. Daniel H. Stern,Chair of the FLC Board of Directors, welcomed the audience, stepping into a role previously held by Lesli Klainberg, who departed after last year’s festival.
stern then introduced Mariko Stern, the new CEO of Lincoln Center, who expressed her joy at being part of the film community. She emphasized the power of film to ”enthrall, lift, and teach us.”
Furthermore, Stern presented Daniel Battsek, who succeeded Klainberg as Executive director last April. Battsek brings a wealth of experience from Miramax Films, Film4, and Buena Vista International. The selection committee was impressed by his “genuine enthusiasm for our mission and for the future of Film at Lincoln Center.”
Battsek acknowledged the audience’s desire for the films to begin, playfully referencing his own impatience during past NYFF premieres. He then highlighted the festival’s impressive slate of 107 features and shorts from 41 countries, promising an experience that will “inspire, challenge, and move” you.
Remembering Industry Icons
Beyond the excitement of the new festival, a moment of remembrance was observed. Battsek paid tribute to Robert Redford, who recently passed away, recognizing him as a “fearless champion of autonomous voices.” Additionally, the festival’s printed program includes a dedication to filmmaker david Lynch, who died earlier this year.
The 63rd NYFF runs through October 13th, promising a diverse and impactful cinematic experience for all attendees.
