How We Uncovered the Truth
Understanding the scope of this issue required a deep dive into thousands of documents. These included internal communications from the state’s oil and gas regulatory agency, elected officials, state legislators, and even the Environmental Protection Agency.
We also spoke with over 30 individuals directly impacted by this crisis. These conversations included current and former state employees, those working within the oil and gas industry, and, most importantly, citizens whose lives have been disrupted by contaminated water and land.
What’s Happening? The Cycle of Wastewater
Oil and gas extraction generates vast amounts of wastewater – a byproduct laden with naturally occurring radioactive materials, salts, and other pollutants. This wastewater is often disposed of through a process called injection into deep underground wells.
however, this practice isn’t without risk. Here’s a breakdown of the key concerns:
* Well Integrity: Aging or poorly constructed wells can leak, allowing wastewater to migrate upwards.
* Induced Seismicity: Injection can trigger earthquakes, potentially fracturing underground formations and creating pathways for contamination.
* Over-Injection: Pumping too much wastewater into the ground can overwhelm the capacity of disposal wells.
* Surface Spills & Leaks: Accidents during transportation and storage can lead to direct contamination of surface water and soil.
