Paul McCartney has one of his first bass guitars back after 54 years. The Beatles singer and composer bought the instrument in 1961. About nine years later, the bass guitar disappeared. A major search operation was launched last year.

This is a bass guitar from the Höfner brand. McCartney used the instrument extensively during concerts in the early 1960s, when the Beatles were not yet world famous. Later he used even more models from the brand, which are immediately recognizable due to their characteristic shape.

Last year, McCartney decided to turn to Höfner for help in a search for the lost bass guitar. The instrument was last seen during the album’s recording sessions Let It Be in 1970, also the band’s last released album. A global search was then launched last September, which received a lot of attention on social media.

Earlier this week, a 21-year-old student reported on X that he had returned the wanted bass guitar to McCartney. He is said to have inherited the instrument The Guardian. Höfner has verified its authenticity, a McCartney representative said on Thursday. “Paul is extremely grateful to everyone who helped,” the statement said.
