According to PokeBeach, the expansion contains a total of 233 cards, featuring 155 cards in the main set and 78 secret rares. The expansion serves as the B4 set for the application, complementing the physical Pokémon TCG set Storm Emeralda.

Card Lineup and Combat Mechanics

The new expansion brings several powerful ex cards and supporting Pokémon to the meta. Notable card details include:

  • Mega Rayquaza ex: Features 180 HP and the Mega Burst attack, which deals 50 base damage plus an additional 50 damage for every Fire and Lightning energy discarded from the Pokémon, as detailed by ComicBook.com.
  • Mega Gallade ex: Boasts 220 HP and utilizes the Resonating Blade attack, dealing 100 base damage plus 50 more if a Supporter card is played that turn.
  • Mega Metagross ex: Equipped with 230 HP and the Gatling Slug attack, inflicting 100 damage plus 10 additional damage for every Metal energy attached.
  • Swanna ex: Features 150 HP and a Jet Wing attack that deals 140 damage.

Support cards such as Wally allow players to take a normal energy from the energy zone and attach it directly to a Stage 2 Pokémon, while the Rainbow Cave Stadium card permits players to discard newly spawned energy from the energy zone once per turn to produce the next energy.

Core Game Feature Updates and Quality of Life Changes

Alongside the new cards, the release introduces vital quality-of-life updates to core game mechanics. Players can now share their custom decks with other users using 2D pattern codes, according to The Pokémon Company. Furthermore, when a player obtains a card included in multiple booster packs, it is now automatically registered in the card dex for all corresponding booster packs, a change that applies retrospectively to cards already owned.

The update also introduces a new guaranteed-drop mechanic: fulfilling specific conditions when opening a booster pack guarantees that the next booster pack opened from the same expansion will contain a four-diamond (♦♦♦♦) rarity card or higher.

Summer Roadmap, Events, and Gift Missions

The release of Ruler of the Skies anchors a broader summer roadmap featuring events and special rewards spanning from late July through late October. Elite deck gift missions allow players to earn a Fighting-type deck featuring Mega Lucario ex and Hitmonchan ex, while additional collection missions offer support Trainer cards such as Leaf, Sabrina, and Red.
