Research from Tilburg University shows that the use of smartphones near young babies and children has a negative effect on their emotional well-being and development. Researcher Marion van den Heuvel believes that a telephone has no place in a family, especially not in a child’s first year. NU.nl reports this.

Parents who spend a lot of time on their phones and therefore have little real contact with their child can disrupt bonding. Child psychiatrists also see this happening more and more often. More and more children are not feeling well mentally and this may be caused by attachment problems that arise in childhood. After all, that is one of the most important risk factors for developing depression or anxiety disorders later in life.

Children also mirror the behavior of their parents, says researcher Tony van Rooij. They may therefore find it very normal that their parents spend a lot of time on their phones and want to do so themselves. “It is known that children sometimes become more rebellious and eager to seek attention.”
