Sony Music Group owns half of Michael Jackson’s music catalogue. Sources confirm this to Variety. The total catalog, consisting of the publishing rights and the masters, is estimated at approximately 1.2 billion dollars (1.11 billion euros). According to Billboard, Sony would have paid at least 600 million dollars (more than 550 million euros).

The deal doesn’t just include Jackson’s own work. Sources confirm to Variety that Jackson’s legendary Mijac catalog is also part of the agreement. This concerns several titles by successful artists such as Sly & the Family Stone, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Percy Sledge, Dion and other well-known acts. Royalties from the Broadway musical MJ and other theater productions featuring Jackson’s music are not included in the catalog.

Jackson’s catalog is one of the most lucrative in the music business, experts say. His 1982 album Thriller is one of the two best-selling albums of all time. It was the first record to achieve thirty times platinum.

Representatives for Sony, the Jackson heirs and Primary Wave, the company that also owns a small portion of the rights, declined or did not respond to requests from Variety to comment on the deal.
