A Slight Decrease in Letters, But Continued Enthusiasm
According to a recent statement from Swiss Post, the number of letters received in 2025 represents a slight decrease of approximately 2% compared to the previous year. Despite this minor dip, the volume of correspondence underscores the strong cultural significance of writing to Santa in Switzerland. The organization reported receiving 31,034 letters in total.
Dedicated “Elves” at Work
To manage the influx of letters, Swiss Post mobilizes a dedicated team of eight “elves” stationed at a special Santa Claus branch in Ticino. These individuals meticulously sort and categorize the letters by language, ensuring that each child receives a personalized response. This process involves collecting, sorting, and translating messages, drawings, and questions from children throughout the contry.
Regional Distribution of Letters
The distribution of letters to Santa remains relatively stable across Switzerland’s linguistic regions. Approximately 60% of the letters originate from French-speaking Switzerland (Romandy), while 20% come from German-speaking Switzerland, and another 20% from Ticino. This regional breakdown highlights the widespread participation in this cherished tradition.
Increased school Participation
Notably, 2025 saw an increase in letters sent from schools. A total of 376 letters were submitted by schools, representing a rise in participation compared to the previous year, with 6,577 students contributing to the collective correspondence.
