Taiwanian authorities have detained a journalist and several current and former military personnel on suspicion of espionage, escalating concerns about Chinese infiltration on the island. The investigation centers around allegations that the journalist, Lin Chen-you, allegedly passed funds to military officials in exchange for sensitive information that was then relayed to mainland China.
Espionage Investigation and Arrests
On January 16, 2026, Taiwanese prosecutors approved detention orders for all those involved, following raids on the reporter’s residence and the homes of nine active and retired military personnel, according to a statement from the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office [Taiwan High Prosecutors Office]. The investigation was triggered by concerns over potential security breaches and the unauthorized disclosure of military secrets.
The Prosecutor’s Office alleges that Lin Chen-you, a reporter for CTi News, provided sums ranging from several thousand to tens of thousands of New Taiwan dollars to military personnel. These officials are accused of later providing classified military information to contacts in mainland China. Those detained, including Lin and five military personnel, are suspected of violating taiwan’s national Security Act, Anti-Corruption Act, and Criminal Code.
