Thailand braces for Widespread Flooding as Storm Kalmaegi Approaches
Residents across Thailand are preparing for potential flooding this weekend as Storm kalmaegi, now a weakening typhoon, tracks towards the nation. Authorities have issued warnings for Bangkok and 65 provinces, urging preparedness for meaningful rainfall and rising water levels. This situation demands attention, especially for communities along the Chao Phraya River and in low-lying areas.
Current Situation & River Levels
Currently, the Chao Phraya River is experiencing increased flow rates. The river is flowing between 3,050 and 3,250 cubic meters per second upstream from the Chao Phraya barrage in Chai Nat province. To manage the influx, the Royal Irrigation Department has increased the discharge rate at the barrage to 2,700 cubic meters per second, up from 2,500.
This increase will likely cause water levels to rise by 60-90 centimeters in unprotected low-lying areas downstream. Remember, during the severe floods of 2011, the Chao Phraya River reached a peak flow rate of 3,703 cubic meters per second at the barrage.
Provinces Under Flood Watch
The following provinces are currently under a flood warning, with a particular focus on communities lacking embankment protection:
* Uthai Thani
* Chai Nat
* Sing Buri
* Ang Thong
* Suphan Buri
* Ayutthaya
* Lop Buri
* Pathum Thani
* Samut Prakan
* nonthaburi
* Bangkok
These areas, encompassing the capital and the Central Plains, are especially vulnerable due to their proximity to the Chao Phraya River. Beyond these, the entire North, Northeast, Central Plains, and East regions, along with some provinces on the Andaman coast in the South, are also on alert.
kalmaegi’s Path & Impact
Weakening Typhoon Kalmaegi is expected to reach northeastern Thailand on friday. While downgraded from a typhoon, the storm still carries the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flooding. You should stay informed about the storm’s progress and heed any evacuation orders issued by local authorities.
Regional Impact: Vietnam Takes Precautions
The approaching storm is already impacting neighboring countries. Vietnam has been forced to close six airports – Buon Ma Thuot, Pleiku, Tuy Hoa, Chi Lai Phu Cat and Lien Khuong – as Kalmaegi nears its central regions. This closure is disrupting hundreds of flights and highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
What You Can Do to Prepare
As the storm approaches, it’s crucial to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your property. Consider these actions:
* Stay informed: Monitor weather updates from reliable sources.
* Secure Valuables: Move essential belongings to higher ground.
* Prepare an emergency Kit: Include food, water, medication, and a first-aid kit.
* Heed Warnings: follow instructions from local authorities, including potential evacuation orders.
* be Aware of Your Surroundings: Avoid low-lying areas and fast-moving water.
This is a developing situation, and continued vigilance is key. By staying informed and prepared, you can minimize the risk to yourself and your community. Remember,safety is paramount during severe weather events.
