Last Thursday (21), one of the most anticipated science fiction series of 2024 arrived on Netflix: The 3-Body Problem (3 Body Problem, in the original). Created by David Benioff, DB Weiss (both from Game of Thrones) e Alexander Woo (True Blood), the work has attracted a lot of attention from viewers due to its complex and highly intriguing plot.

Based on the award-winning trilogy of books “The Three-Body Problem”, written by Chinese author Liu Cixin, The 3-Body Problem shows, in short, how events from the past can influence the present and future in a catastrophic way.

“A fateful decision made in 1960s China echoes through space and time to a group of scientists in the present, forcing them to face the greatest threat to humanity,” says the synopsis.

6 – Dark (Netflix)

The story involves time travel, temporal paradoxes and family secrets. The narrative is complex and intricate, exploring themes such as free will, determinism and the consequences of our actions.

The work, which has three seasons, is known for its dark atmosphere and for challenging viewers with surprising twists.

5 – Resistance (Star+)

Launched at the end of last year, Resistance (The Creator) is a great option for those who like interesting stories about Science fiction. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film also brings together elements of drama, action and adventure to compose its narrative, which brings themes linked to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to the spotlight.

“Amid a future war between humans and artificial intelligence, Joshua is recruited to locate and kill the Creator – a mysterious architect responsible for developing a weapon capable of ending the confrontation and all of humanity”, says the film’s synopsis.

John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney and Ken Watanabe appear in the cast.

4 – Arrival (Netflix)

The arrival (Arrival) is a science fiction and drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve (who is behind the new films by there), based on the short story “Story of Your Life”, by Ted Chiang, released in 1998,

The plot follows a linguist, played by Amy Adams, recruited by the United States government to try to communicate with extraterrestrials who have arrived on Earth. The film explores themes such as language, communication and the nature of time, while delving into the protagonist’s emotional journey. It is praised for its intelligent approach and contemplative atmosphere.

Jeremy Renner, from Hawkeye, and Forest Whitaker, from The Last King of Scotland, are also in the central cast.

3 – Contact (rental on prime video)

Officially launched in 1997, Contact (Contact) is a feature film directed by Robert Zemeckis, based on the novel of the same name by Carl Sagan. The production features big Hollywood names in its cast, such as Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, Jena Malone and David Morse.

The plot centers on a scientist, played by Foster, who leads a team in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence through radio messages. The film addresses issues such as faith, science, politics and the search for meaning in the universe. 2 – Devs (Star+)

Created by director Alex Garland (Ex Machina – Artificial Instinct), Devs is a television miniseries originally developed for the FX channel and Hulu streaming. In total, the sci-fi narrative features 8 episodes, which also feature elements of suspense and drama.

The plot follows a software engineer who investigates the mysterious development division of a technology company. As she delves deeper, she uncovers disturbing secrets about free will, determinism, and the nature of reality.

The series, starring Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman and Alison Pill, combines elements of science fiction with philosophy, exploring concepts such as simulation, multiverse and morality.

1 – Invasion (Apple TV+)

Finally, we have the series Invasion, from Apple TV+, which already has two complete seasons available on streaming. Created by Simon Kinberg and David Weil, the attraction, as well as The 3-Body Problemshows contact between aliens and human beings, however, in a more intimate way.

The story follows five everyday characters in different parts of the world as a global alien invasion takes place. The series explores how these people react in the face of a global crisis, both in terms of physical and emotional survival.

The series is known for its more humanistic approach, focusing on interpersonal relationships and ethical dilemmas rather than just action or science.
