The management of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant informed me that in the future, only employees who have acquired Russian citizenship and signed a contract with the Russian operator of the facility may work there.

Rafael Grossi, the director general of the IAEA is preparing to visit the largest nuclear power plant in Europe next week. The agency said in a statement that it will request additional information about the “new announcement” involving the staff.

About 4,500 people currently work in the area of the power plant, 940 applications are still being examined – explained the IAEA, adding that workers were also sent there from Russia. Before the war, 11,500 people worked at the nuclear power plant.

Grossi emphasized it is crucial that the facility is staffed by qualified people to ensure nuclear safety. He added that personnel had been significantly reduced since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

The IAEA, which carries out its supervisory activities through its on-site inspectors, announced at the beginning of the year that its experts were forbidden from entering certain sections of the facility, and in mid-January, it reported that the nuclear power plant had been mined again.
