The Romanian city with two ports is in deep decline, and its community now faces poverty and lack of economic development prospects. The demise of the port industry led to the collapse of the local economy, leaving the city on the brink of poverty and causing significant hardship for its residents.

The Romanian city with two ports has undergone a dramatic transformation. It was abandoned and the community now faces poverty and decay. The appearance of the area is sad and desolate, despite its impressive past potential.

The city in Romania, with two ports, from which the dust was chosen

Only three hours away from Bucharest is the Romanian city with two ports, Corabia. It houses a tourist and a commercial port, as well as a grain exchange. Although it was once considered a place full of opportunities, in recent decades it has fallen into a deplorable state, becoming almost unrecognizable. The bed of the Danube filled with silt, making navigation impossible.

And all the hopes of the inhabitants were dashed. Journalists from Digi24 arrived in Corabia and revealed worrying realities. The former director of IAS Corabia, Mihai Ciobanu, confirmed that the Romanian city with two ports is no longer but a shadow of what it once was. Compared to the production of a few decades ago and the operation of the synthetic fiber factory, now everything is in ruins.

“We were operating a 14,000-hectare dam, in which 1,500 hectares of trees were planted. Of apple, hair, plum, apricot, cherry, sour cherry. And having the raw material, we also had a canning factory, with a fruit warehouse, which had a capacity of 5,500 tons.

A natural juice factory that processed 200 tons of apples a day. Animals… three big farms. Of sheep… about 5,000 sheep, a bull fattening complex and a 700-head cow farm”, he told Digi24.

The city has become unrecognizable

Former employees confirmed the same things. Tăbăcăria Minerală Corabia, from the Romanian city with two ports, met the same fate. Also there, there was a place where shoes were produced. At present, everything has become a ruin. Why is no action being taken? Most believe that political factors also play an important role. Even though there were proposals, nothing happened for years.

The Digi24 team tried to find out why the Sugar Factory in Corabia no longer works and why the huge building was left in disrepair. Opinions are divided. Why can’t the city with two ports take advantage of this? Mayor Iulică Oane confirms that there were many requests, including from cruise ships.

Potential is there, involvement is not

After looking at the infrastructure, hopes were dashed. However, the mayor believes that if the two ports were to return to their past form, then the situation could change for the entire city community.

“We had requests including from cruise ships. To stop at this port. When they saw the infrastructure, they didn’t give us a chance. If the port would return to the activity that I know, when I was a child, I think there will be no need to take taxes from the population. They will be at minimum. And the revenues will create a surplus income for the local budget”, revealed Iulică Oane.

Currently, Corabia, with considerable potential for development, is turning its hopes to investors. However, until now, they were only passing. Despite efforts to attract European funds, it is uncertain whether the city will be able to recover from its own decay.
