A Canarian tourist who is seriously ill in a hospital in Mexico has requested help from the Spanish authorities to be able to return to Tenerife, as reported to EFE by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Action of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Luis Perestelo.

Juan José María González de Chaves, who traveled to Mexico on vacation accompanied by his wife to see his daughter, suffered there, among other pathologies, a diffuse alveolar hemorrhage and had to pay 90,000 euros after twenty days in a hospital.

The Spanish consul in Monterrey assisted the family last Saturday, said Perestelo, who remains in contact with the family, to whom he has offered the collaboration of the Government of the Canary Islands. However, he has indicated that it is necessary for his health to stabilize to be able to return to Tenerife, whether on a regular or extraordinary flight.

Likewise, he has indicated that the role of the regional government is to ensure the rights of this Canarian citizen, who had contracted travel insurance that refuses to pay hospital expenses because he claims that he was already sick before traveling.

The patient’s wife, Carolina Martínez, told EFE that her husband is in the ICU after 25 days with the support of a respirator “in stable but serious condition.”

Martínez has indicated that they have contacted her from both the Government of Spain and the Canary Islands to find out the state of her husband’s health, as well as to see how to repatriate him without putting his health at risk.

“We ask to return home,” said Martínez, who explained that first his health must be “reestablished a little more” so that he can fly.

Regarding medical insurance, she added that the answer they are given is that her husband had pneumonia and thrombosis before leaving Spain, so they do not want to be responsible for any expenses, not even repatriation.

The daughter of the affected person has launched a campaign to collect money through the GofundMe platform to continue paying for the treatment and medications, which has already obtained 25,000 dollars (about 23,200 euros). In the publication he says that on March 31, while in Monterrey, his father began to feel bad, very tired, coughing and short of breath, so they went to a medical consultation at a hospital and he was prescribed several medicines.

After several days, he worsened and lost total sensation in his right leg, in which they found several thrombi and, in addition, it was determined that his lungs had collapsed. His symptoms worsened and he had to be transferred to the ICU, where his lungs worsened and after several tests it was diagnosed that he had diffuse alveolar hemorrhage.

According to his daughter, the man, who has been transferred to a public hospital because the family no longer has resources, will require a new operation that costs more than 15,000 euros to save his leg.

He points out that they have had to borrow money and go into debt “given the serious situation” and that they still have to pay for more medications and the treatments that are missing so that the man can recover, for which he requests citizen collaboration.
