The path of key interest rates in the United States remains uncertain due to persistent inflation pressures and rising geopolitical instability in the Middle East, according to financial authorities. First Vice Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il convened discussions in Seoul with key regulatory officials, including representatives from the Bank of Korea, following the United States central bank’s decision to hold its benchmark rate steady.
The Federal Reserve left its federal funds rate unchanged at a range of 3.5 to 3.75 percent, marking the fifth consecutive meeting that policymakers have opted to pause adjustments.
During the briefing in Seoul, officials evaluated current macroeconomic indicators and international monetary trends. “The participants noted that the U.S. economy is maintaining solid momentum, with business facility investment also remaining robust, led by AI-related investment,” the finance ministry stated in an official release.
Global Inflation and Middle East Pressures
Despite domestic strength in the United States, policymakers highlighted external headwinds that complicate future monetary policy. “However, they also assessed that the rate path may remain uncertain, considering high inflation in the United States and Europe, along with geopolitical instability in the Middle East,” the ministry noted.
Policy Coordination and Market Monitoring
Korean financial regulators vowed to continue tracking policy signals from the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank.
