Fritz in a club statement: “Peter is our absolute preferred candidate for this position. He brings everything to the role at Werder, both personally and professionally. His experience as a player, but also as a sports director and managing director will certainly help us. From the new season onwards, he will focus intensively on professional matters, have close contact with the team, the functional team and the coaching team and make decisions and take responsibility there.

Niemeyer was a Werder player for many years and moved to Hertha BSC, where he was even captain.

A strange scene made him really famous: the accidental wiping of referee Bibiana Steinhaus (45).

It was like this: On the 7th matchday of the 2010/2011 second division season, the then Hertha clearer touched the referee’s chest in the middle of the game. What looks like intentional later in the photo is actually an accidental touch.

Both later smile about the unusual scene that amuses the whole of football Germany.

Niemeyer: “She was standing a little further away than I thought, I wanted to give her a pat on the shoulder. But you also have to entertain the spectators a little.” Steinhaus, who now works for the English Referees Association: “We ran past each other and touched each other. This was not an unusual situation for him or me. I think you can leave it with a wink.”
