X makes it possible to start audio and video calls for users who do not have a Premium subscription. Previously, non-paying users could only receive calls from others.
A software engineer from X let us know on social media that the ability to make audio and video calls in the app is being ‘slowly rolled out’ to users without a Premium subscription.
Users can now also allow anyone to call them in their X profile settings. Previously, the only options were to receive calls only from users they follow, only from users listed in their address book, or only from verified users. A user must first have sent a private message to an account before the latter party can initiate a call. The ability to receive calls via X can also be completely disabled.
In October, X added audio and video calling to the iOS version of the social media platform. Got it in January also the Android version has this function. Users can choose to start an audio or video call in a private conversation. To do this, they must click on the telephone icon at the top right and then choose between an audio and a video call. Initially this was only possible for Premium subscribers. Free users could already receive calls.
