  • The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a candidate for one of the best smartphones this year
  • The Chinese manufacturer entices with a premium look and breathtaking equipment
  • There is no water resistance, wireless charging, satellite communication or infrared port
  • The highlight is the set of four 50 Mpx cameras

Xiaomi will hold a press conference on Sunday, February 25, at which it will introduce the flagship Xiaomi 14 smartphone series to the global market. Although it was first revealed last October in China, the Sunday press conference was supposed to bring hot news in the form of the most equipped Xiaomi 14 Ultra model. However, the Chinese manufacturer decided to spoil us with a surprise, and a little while ago it revealed this phone in its homeland. So let’s take a look ahead at what awaits us in a few days.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra: challenger of the best

At first glance, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is a premium device, which can be seen not only from the list of parameters, but also from the design itself. The Chinese manufacturer gave its new product a luxurious appearance, which is due to premium materials and a huge protruding main camera module with four lenses inside. The phone will be available in at least four colors and three different designs in the Chinese market:

  • Black and white model with aluminum body and artificial leather back
  • Blue model with aluminum body and Dragon Crystal glass back
  • Black model with titanium back and faux leather back

Individual color variants of Xiaomi 14 Ultra

For the latest version, Xiaomi boasts the use of grade 5 titanium, matching last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max – but this version is unlikely to see the global market. The weight of the phone is 224-230 grams (depending on the material), the increased resistance meeting IP68 protection is pleasing.

The phone should be able to withstand even rougher handling, thanks to the new metal unibody frame made of solid aluminum alloy and ceramic glass. Xiaomi claims that the bending resistance is 8 percent higher than in the case of the iPhone’s titanium frame, and the screen is supposed to be even 10 times more resistant to falls. The display of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is not protected by any “gorilla”, but by its own Xiaomi Ceramic Glass. We can’t wait for YouTuber Zack Nelson of the JerryRigEverything channel to test it with his sharp spikes.

The display itself boasts breathtaking parameters. It is a slightly curved OLED screen with a diagonal of 6.78″ and a 2K resolution (1,440 × 3,200 pixels). The panel has a variable refresh rate of 1-120 Hz, a peak brightness of 3,000 nits and a pulse width modulation of 1,920 Hz. The display includes a fingerprint sensor and a hole for a 32MP selfie camera with an aperture of f/2.0 and the ability to record 4K video at 60 fps.

4 x 50 megapixels tuned by Leica

You will undoubtedly create the main charms with the rear cameras, on which the manufacturer certainly did not skimp. The giant circular module houses the following cameras:

  • 50 Mpx main with 1″ Sony LYT-900 sensor, Hyper OIS stabilization and variable aperture f/1.63-f/4.0
  • 50 Mpx wide-angle with a 122° angle of view, f/1.8 aperture and macro mode support with focus from 5 cm
  • 50 Mpx with 3.2x optical zoom, optical stabilization and f/1.8 aperture
  • 50 Mpx periscopic with 5x optical zoom, optical stabilization and f/2.5 aperture

In the presentation, Xiaomi particularly praised the ability of all sensors to capture much more light than the competition, which is especially reflected in the quality of images taken in poor lighting conditions. The neural unit Xiaomi AISP also lends a hand to the work, which is supposed to be the first ever model computing AI platform for photography. Thanks to the four large models FusionLM, ToneLM, ColorLM and PortraitLM, it should be able to fine-tune the results, especially at large zoom levels. The main camera can save recordings in Ultra RAW format. The phone is also capable of recording video in 8K resolution, or 4K at 60 fps. Camera tuning was again taken care of by the Leica brand.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra Package Contents (for China)

As with last year’s model, it will be possible to purchase a special photographic accessory for the phone in the form of a grip for a better fit, which has an integrated 1,500mAh battery and a hardware camera trigger. There will also be circular filters that can be screwed onto the circular camera module.

High performance and uncompromising connectivity

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which the manufacturer has treated to special cooling with an evaporator chamber with a double loop, which also removes heat from the camera module. In addition to the main processor, Xiaomi added its own co-processor Surge T1, which is used for better signal reception – it improves mobile by 37 percent, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth by 16 percent. The phone also supports two-way satellite communication, but probably only in China.

Cooling system

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra will go on the market in several memory variants, the top one boasts 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage. We would look in vain for a slot for memory cards, but two nano SIM cards can be placed in the drawer. In terms of wireless connectivity, there is nothing missing, we have 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, satellite communication and even an infrared port for controlling home electronics.

The phone also boasts a large battery with a capacity of 5,300 mAh, which can be charged either with a power of 90 watts via cable or 80 watts wirelessly. Reverse wireless charging with a maximum power of 10 watts is also available. The operating system is HyperOS
