In October last year, Xpeng AeroHT, a subsidiary of the famous Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng, unveiled a remarkable digital concept blurring the lines between a futuristic van and a hybrid pickup, called the Land Aircraft Carrier. At first, this concept, featuring three axles, six wheels and the ability to transport a small flying car, seemed to be confined to virtual space. However, recent developments indicate that Xpeng is making progress in turning this concept into a production vehicle.

A heavily camouflaged Land Aircraft Carrier prototype was recently spotted on a truck outside an Xpeng plant in China. According to Chinese media reports, positive feedback on the initial concept has encouraged Xpeng to continue development of the model, with orders to begin this year and customer deliveries planned for 2025.

The prototype largely retains design elements of the concept, retaining the characteristic overall shape and proportions. The front end resembles the X9 minivan, featuring a short overhang. Certain angles hint at design inspiration taken from the Tesla Cybertruck, which is particularly evident in the truck’s angular roof.

While the prototype looks like the concept, it’s unlikely to feature a flying car in the trunk when it goes on sale. The industry of this type of car is still in its infancy and getting regulatory approval for such a model would be a lengthy process. Conversely, obtaining approval for a six-wheel pick-up/van for road use is likely to be more appropriate.

The craze for three-axle, six-wheel vehicles, catalyzed by the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6 a decade ago, remains widespread among enthusiasts. 6×6 conversions have become commonplace in the pickup and SUV aftermarket, and Xpeng seems poised to capitalize on that interest.

Although the technical specifications of the Land Aircraft Carrier are not yet available, it is expected to be all-electric and may use the battery pack and motor technology from existing Nio models.
