In Italy, Milan is proposing a new law that would ban it ice cream after midnight to protect the “peace and health” of residents.

If passed, the new law could take effect from next month and last until November. It is proposed to ban all takeaways, including pizzas and drinks, after 00:30. on weekdays and 01:30 a.m. on weekends and holidays.

All this is aimed at preventing noisy crowds in the streets, which disturb the sleep of local residents. Selling ice cream at night is part of Italian culture, so the city’s ice cream sellers are not happy with this law, Euronews writes.

Mayor Giuseppe Sala said last month that “a significant number of residents complain about excessive noise”.

“In the course of my duties, I have to listen to all citizens, including those who have to work and those who want to do their own business,” added G. Sala.

“We are looking for a balance between communication and entertainment, the peace and health of the population and the free economic activity of merchants and entrepreneurs,” Marco Granelli, deputy mayor in charge of security, wrote on Facebook.

This is not the first time the city has tried to ban late-night ice cream. in 2013 the city council, led by then-mayor Guiliano Pisapia, tried unsuccessfully to push the late-night ice-cream eaters off the streets. The proposed measures have met with opposition in what Italian media have dubbed an “ice cream cone battle”.

Residents have until the beginning of May to file an appeal and propose changes to the new proposed law.

“The problem of nightlife exists, but this rule will only harm business,” explained Lino Stoppani, president of Fipe, the Italian federation of public and tourism service providers.

“I would personally ban the sale of takeaway alcohol in the entire center,” Lorenza Bonaccorsi, president of Rome 1 municipality, told Il Messaggero newspaper.
