For each 1 MET (measure of exercise intensity) increase in physical fitness, the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and acute heart disease was lowered by 7 to 51 percent. Additionally, high physical fitness is associated with a 37-69% reduced risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, atrial fibrillation, dementia, and depression.

“The message is very simple,” said lead study author Grant Tompkinson. “The more you engage in breath-taking exercise, the lower your risk of premature death or future disease,” he said. “This shows that even small changes in fitness can provide significant health benefits, especially for people starting from a low baseline.” He said.
