During a forum organized in 2020 by the France Alzheimer association in the center of Bété, the town of Casteljaloux positioned itself as a “helping city”. An agreement was then signed between the two structures, with the aim of helping with prevention and being as close as possible to people caring for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and related ones. With this in mind, a first Alzheimer’s café was held at the beginning of the month at the Le Grand Bain association café, at the initiative of the Casteljaloux municipal social action center.

Éliane Mole, France Alzheimer volunteer in the Nérac sector, and Sandrine Couratin, head of the CCAS, were in charge of this kick-off.

“I would have had these exchanges at the beginning…”

In this friendly setting, the first explained the role of the association, whose departmental headquarters is located in Passage-d’Agen, with reception centers in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Nérac, Fumel and Marmande/Tonneins. Discussion groups are thus offered to caregivers, in the presence of a specialized psychologist, offering a space for support, listening, sharing and exchange.

A handful of people were present for this first Casteljalousan café. Like Marie-Pierre, whose “mom was recently diagnosed”, or Claudie, who takes care of her husband at home, when the latter is not temporarily staying at the nursing home. As for René, the first signs of the disease appeared in March 2023 in his wife. “I would have had these discussions at the beginning, it would have helped me a lot,” he confided. He and the others were, in any case, able to share their daily difficulties, sometimes marked by aggression, language disorders or loss of objects.

The next Café Alzheimer is scheduled for Thursday April 4, from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Grand Bain. Information from Éliane Mole, on 06 47 87 27 76.

In two figures

According to figures published on the Public Health France website, 1,200,000 people in France are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia. In Lot-et-Garonne, according to data from the France Alzheimer’s association, the department has around 8,000 patients.
