It has been a sad year for the PC industry in the shadow of covid.

Laptops increase total sales – desktops are still struggling due to China

The analysts have repeatedly urged, especially in 2023, that sales will return to more normal conditions this year, and now the first sign is here of just that. IDC reports that PC sales increased by 1.5 percent in this period compared to the same period last year, helped by the sale of 59.8 million PCs.

IDC: “With inflation numbers on the way down, PC shipments have started to recover in most regions, leading to growth in the US as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). However, deflationary pressures in China directly affected the global PC market. As the largest consumer of desktop PCs, weak demand in China led to another quarter of decline for global desktop shipments, which were already facing pressure from laptops as the preferred form factor.”

Have faith in AI PCs

On the other hand, the first quarter of 2023 was the weakest PC sales in history with a decline of 28.7 percentso it should just be missing, but at least the hope is that this is a trend that will accelerate.

“Despite China’s problems, the improvement is expected to continue in 2024 as newer AI PCs hit shelves later this year and as commercial buyers begin to update PCs purchased during the pandemic. Along with growth in shipments, AI PCs are also expected to be more expensive, providing additional opportunities for PC and component manufacturers,” IDC said.

The analysts refer to Microsoft’s label for machines with fast enough NPU to run advanced AI tasks with either Intel Core Ultra or Snapdragon X Elite which Microsoft has high expectations for and which they believe are faster than the Apple M3. This is preceded by the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 which will be revealed on May 20, the day before Build 2024.
