French Academy Rejects State Council’s Inclusive Writing Guidelines

Not a Legal Error

By the close ⁤of 2021, the Francophonie Avenir association had unsuccessfully requested‍ Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris (from the Socialist Party), to‍ remove two plaques⁢ displayed in a hallway of the City Hall, at the‍ entrance to ⁣the paris Council chamber.

Following a petition from Francophonie Avenir, both the Paris⁣ Administrative Court and the Paris Administrative ⁢Court of Appeal steadfast that no existing law prohibits the use of inclusive writing ⁤within the french language. Subsequently, in late December, the Council of State affirmed ⁣that the court had not made an⁤ error of law.It clarified that inclusive writing dose not constitute the use of ⁤a language other than French, but rather a specific form of French orthography, distinct from Spanish, Italian, or any other language.

Established in 1635 by Cardinal Richelieu, the ⁤chief minister to King Louis XIII, the Académie Française is tasked with giving certain rules to our language and making ‍it pure, eloquent‍ and capable of treating the arts⁤ and sciences. The Academy compiles a⁢ dictionary and issues rulings on orthographic standards.

The Ongoing Debate Surrounding Inclusive Writing

the question of ‍ inclusive ‍writing continues to ⁢spark debate in france, with legal challenges and differing interpretations of its place within‍ the French language.Recent ⁤discussions, particularly those of January 2026, highlight‍ the ⁢complexities⁢ of balancing linguistic tradition with evolving social norms. I’ve‍ found that many of these debates center around the perceived ‍impact on clarity and the established rules of grammar.

Initially, the dispute involved plaques displayed at‍ the Paris City Hall, prompting legal action by the ⁣Francophonie Avenir association. Thier concern wasn’t necessarily about the language itself, but rather the official ⁢endorsement of a ⁣practice they viewed as deviating from standard French. This case underscores a broader tension between ⁣preserving linguistic heritage and embracing changes that reflect a commitment to gender equality.
